Nathan writes:

Since last being featured on IAmKoreanAmerican.com, a lot has occurred in my life which has ultimately resulted in me moving to South Korea and taking up residence with my birth family.

It was a little over a year ago that I had discovered my birth family after a very jet-lagged motivated email to my adoption agency. A short and quite unexpected six days later, I had received an e-mail stating that my family had been discovered. Shortly thereafter, my birth father, mother, and two sisters, were in direct communication with me, already on our way to plan a meeting in South Korea.

Skip ahead to March of 2012, I quit my job and my career track, and I had found myself on an Asiana Airlines flight to Seoul, South Korea, with a one way ticket in hand. I have been here in Ilsan/Seoul, South Korea for nearly three-weeks now, and find the honeymoon period already absent from my life.

I enrolled in the Yonsei University Korean Language Institute for the spring semester, as well as have accepted a position with the Holt Homecoming program through the Holt Korea Adoption Agency. I have a few friends from back home (United States) that have made the transition into Korea a bit more easy. However, I also have a wonderful support system, made up of my birth father, mother, two sisters, and an array of aunts, uncles, and cousins, and as well as my grandmother, who are extremely supportive and helpful during my stay.

To make life a bit more normal like back at home, I have already ran a few long distance running races here in Korea, and have signed up for a few more this spring/summer. Life is definitely different, but it is challenging, unique, and amazing all at the same time. I used to complain about the daily 9-5, not learning much, and just going through a routine, day after day, and now, I am presented with new experiences at every turn. You could say, it’s one big adventure, with no end in sight.

I look forward to meeting other Korean-Americans who could possibly be in/around Seoul, during my time here. As I said before, I have no return date as of yet, so I am here to learn, live, and love every minute of this journey.

You can read more about my search, reunion, and life in Korea, as an adoptee at: www.adoptedthoughts.com

It has been over 2 years since my original post and LOOK how my hair has grown!!!

Well first and foremost, I must add another "occupation" to my list of things I do for a living.  A counselor! I am now a Christian counselor to many and am having a blast, learning SO much, and am eternally grateful to God for every aspect of it.  Another major change is that I have moved to New York!! As of yet, I am working in the city and living in Westchester County.  However, I will be moving into the vibrant island of Manhattan in March (lease signed yesterday!! woot!!) and I am so very very excited to see what adventures await.

Something that I have come across in life in NY that has been on my mind as of late is that many Korean Americans believe I am "too Korean".  Probably because I speak Korean better than most and I do tend to bust out my Korean to anyone and everyone (Korean or not) whenever and wherever.  The irony here is that when I am around the Korean-Korean friends (meaning, born and raised in Korea and only have come to the US for their studies, etc. or aka "FOBs") many believe me to be "too American".  But what do those views mean to me?  They just mean that I am perfectly Korean yet perfectly American.  With a mix of German and French in there also.  I am totally fine with that and NYC is treating this little melting pot (with Asian features) VERY well.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL MY FELLOW KOREANS, AMERICANS, KOREAN-AMERICANS, AND MELTING POTS EVERYWHERE!!

Wow, I can't believe it's been more than a year since my face was on this site. Since then, I've launched my official photo website: http://janekchunphotos.com/. But what's really keeping me and my partner Anthony busy is our lovechild, AmerAsian Fashion. We were surprised to find no existing Asian-American fashion street blog out there. I guess it's because there already tons of blogs from the streets of Korea, Japan, and China. Because of this, our love for fashion and style brought our thinking caps together and after several months of planning, we gave birth to the very first Asian-American fashion street blog: AmerAsian Fashion. We really want to showcase what Asian-Americans or Asians in America are rockin on the streets from the east coast to the west. We even travel to New York and California to collect more footage just for this blog. Just to be clear, we don't consider ourselves experts in any way. We are just fashion anthropologists who capture and provide a glimpse into the lifestyles of our fellow Asian-Americans. We truly love being a part of something bigger than ourselves. Hint-hint: we would really love to hear from you.

A few other highlights in my life: I visited Israel for the first time in my life (amazing experience), thanks to a friend, I got dragged into Juarez, the most dangerous city in Mexico during our summer road trip and my pastor appointed me as co-leader of my church's dance & drama performing ministry (think of Will Shuester from Glee). Oh and I got more camera stuff which is always nice. Not a bad year for this gal.

In addition to that, I am focusing on helping people free their voices through classes that incorporate meditation, call and response devotional Sanskrit chanting, gospel, spirit songs, improvisational singing, body percussion, and vocal expressive arts. These classes have the goal of helping people sing and also express themselves vocally in the world (speak their truths). I am currently studying movement-based expressive arts at Tamalpa Institute. Fri, 03 Jun 2011 17:07:00 -0700 Watch Kimchi Chronicles: A New PBS Show About Korean Food & Culture http://iamkoreanamerican.posterous.com/kimchi-chronicles http://iamkoreanamerican.posterous.com/kimchi-chronicles

Kimchichronicles_vongerichtens
An exciting new series has been airing in New York (and will soon be broadcasting nationwide in July!). It's called Kimchi Chronicles, and it is a show following Marja Vongerichten and her star chef husband, Jean-Georges, on their journey all over South Korea's culinary and cultural landscape.

We've been watching the show ever since it first aired and we cannot stop raving about KC! (Last Sunday's episode had Jean-Georges diving with haenyeos in Jeju-do and Marja sharing her haemul jeongol and ganjang gyejang recipes!)

But, aside from exploring some of Korea's treasured dishes, Marja—who is half-Korean and was adopted by an American family at the age of three—adds heart to the show as she invites viewers along on her journey of self-discovery.

That said, the show will resonate with anyone who has a shared throb for Korean food, culture, and roots.

Again, New Yorkers are getting an early viewing (the show airs every Sunday at 4p.m. on WNET), but it will airing on PBS stations nationwide in July.

In the meantime, check out these clips we found on Kimchi Chronicles YouTube channel:

Marja also has a cookbook in the works called The Kimchi Chronicles: Korean Cooking for an American Kitchen, and it will be released on August 2nd. Lock in your copy here!

The Kimchi Chronicles website hasn’t launched yet, but you can check out their Facebook page for updates.

"Since our project launch, we have continuously been pursuing leaders of various disciplines/industries. In 2010, we successfully interviewed 8 inspirational Korean-Canadian/Korean-American leaders, ranging from a lawyer to a senator. We have been fortunate to interview these leaders and spread their inspirational life stories and advice to the young generation of our beloved community. We will continue to expand our network to interview more motivational leaders in the near future.

In addition to our "Follow The Leaders" project, we recently launched another project called "Lead By Example." Ellice writes:

Hi, Project sponsors, project viewers, and project participants...the project being I Am Korean American dissemination,

Last time I wrote, I pretty much shared that I do art, that I enjoy and really cherish certain relationships--and in light of being invited to share my (Korean American?) experience by someone I admire, I find this whole ethnic/national identity thing more complicated and confusing than it might need to be. I recognize that it's really influential in coloring people's perspectives; it's even shaken me a bit. But at the end of the conversation, it's not something that makes us who we are unless we let it be, or make it so--it's just a component of what we are given or presented with upon birth.

Today when I write, to say what I've been up to.. I think that's the funny and interesting thing, in follow up: "you can tell us what you're up to these days", Jenny wrote. Because in that gesture, it is acknowledged that... what we are, and what we do, can never imagine being who we are; it is all the periphery, a shadow or a filler.

So--what have I been up to?

I've taken some time off from MICA {art university}. I'm living with my parents in the midwest. I learned how to cook a little bit from my grandmother, before she flew off to ATL and now Korea. I've been picking myself up from a broken dating relationship. I've retreated into God and received a lot of spiritual, mental, and emotional healing. I've been experiencing lots of healing and bonding with my family, particularly my father. I've begun trying my feet at running with some friends. I've tried one day of the Insanity workout, and walked like a dinosaur for the following week, completely bed-ridden. I've made a handful of new friends. I'm teaching Sunday School, in particular working with sixth grade boys and girls. I've been reading, and playing the piano here and there. I've gotten into a car accident in our cul-de-sac with the curb, and a parking ticket on a dark and stormy night. I've blogged quite a bit. I've been self educating by inhaling as much of the library as I could, selectively. I've enjoyed Suze Orman quite a bit, as well as childrens' sign language books. The news is no longer something I have to do to try to keep up with the world's spin, it's something that I enjoy engaging in to reaffirm that I am a global citizen. I've spent some time in the studio, but also establishing my relationship with art--it's not who I am, it's not even what fulfills me. It is just something I do because I can, and have a lot to share. I've bonded with friends here, and am working out boundaries.

I feel like that brings us full circle, and attention back to the "I Am Korean American" project: Boundaries. Personal, invisible geography. Somehow, the activity of doing and thinking and other verb forms with '-ing', has invited the question of what we're '-ing'-ing around. The mistake would be to say that the '-ing' is the center, wouldn't it?" I know this is kind of a loopy, thought-process'y, perhaps philosophical if we were to be bourgeois, response to "what are you up to these days?", but ...after all, the follow up is for "I Am Korean American", so doesn't it make sense?"

Dredge writes:

In this picture, I’m 3rd from the left on the set of the popular Thai television show At Ten (ตีสิบ). They did a show on foreigners singing in Thai (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLQrxJ5xgss&NR=1). The idea was to reverse Thais copying English, Korean, Mandarin, and other language songs. The line-up was a German, an Italian (who didn’t show up so was replaced with someone who was half-Thai), a Cameroonian, an American (who was German), a Korean (me from the USA), and an Indian. I was the only one who couldn’t sing! I practiced a Thai song but it was a fail! I picked the theme song, ยินดีที่ไม่รู้จัก (Nice Not Knowing You: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Whu6oBYdYvk&feature=related) from the movie กวน มึน โฮ (Hello Stranger: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6qZ3PUvzsc), in which two Thais meet in Korea and fall in love. The movie makes Koreans look a bit senseless, but, it’s a cute romantic comedy. Both the movie and song were very popular and I figured I should work in some kind of Korean connection. I have done a few fun things like this recently.

But mostly, I’ve been doing research, writing, and occasionally teaching. I just published an article on queer media in Bangkok. I’m revising one on the “trendiness” of transgenderism and male effeminacy and I just submitted an article on the Wonder Gay (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=031N31B4EvM), a group of Thai high school students who covered the Wonder Girls “Nobody.”  For that piece I have a section on the Korean Wave in Thailand. I’m doing research on whether Thais think of male to female transgenders as more male or more female, using a technique to construct a cognitive map of different genders/sexualities. I’m starting to conceptualize a paper on the medicalization of transsexualism in Thailand as a form of therapeutic citizenship, in which claims for human rights can be made on the state by asserting that one has a disease. My main project is on Thai middle class gay men’s desires for what I am calling “white” Asians (light skinned Asians, usually Japanese, Korean, or Chinese). I use the term “white” because that is the word Thais use. Like in most of the world, light skin is highly prized. Recently a skin whitening beverage ad campaign included signs over seats on the skytrain that read “Seats Reserved for White People” (สำรองที่นั่งสำหรับ...คนขาว). I’ve also been travelling in the region to get a more comparative perspective on queer issues, especially male to female transgenderism. I visited nat kadaw in Myanmar and hijra in India. In Thailand, transgenderism is generally not associated with any spiritual power, so I’m interested in seeing how other societies organize transgenderism. I only have a few months left in Bangkok, so I’m starting to get anxious about finishing everything I need to do before I leave. It also looks like I’ll be helping with the International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (http://www.icaap10.org), which is in Busan, Korea this year. I’ve been speaking Korean, Thai, and English the last few days – sometimes I think my head will explode and sometimes I just tune out for a bit.

Thu, 07 Apr 2011 09:46:00 -0700 Help Stephen Kim http://iamkoreanamerican.posterous.com/help-stephen-kim http://iamkoreanamerican.posterous.com/help-stephen-kim

Stephenkim
Stephen Jin-Woo Kim is a senior analyst and former State Department contractor who has worked for the government for ten years. On August 27, 2010, Stephen was unjustly indicted under the Espionage Act on charges that he leaked classified information about North Korea’s nuclear intentions to a media correspondent.

With no clear evidence that suggests he acted with criminal intent, Stephen is being charged "based on a prosecutor's theory that Stephen talked to someone in the media about a topic of current events and—in that one and only conversation—disclosed classified information." Furthermore, "the prosecutors do not allege that he gave away any documents or divulged any military plans or operations, or named a confidential source, or took any money, or met in secret or did anything that he thought would injure the United States. All he appears to be charged with is talking to a member of the press which is an allowed and protected activity under the U.S. Constitution."

The case is erroneous, but without support and proper legal defense and resources, Stephen may face up to fifteen years in jail for a "crime" he did not commit.

Here are some ways you can help Stephen:

  • Help spread the word. Push the visibility of the Korean‐American community to the national forefront and show the country that we are united in one voice in standing behind one of our own.
  • Sign his petition online at http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/helpStephenKim/ to tell Washington that we stand behind our fellow Korean-American and demand that he receives full and fair representation
  • Become a member of the Help Stephen Kim Facebook Cause:  http://www.causes.com/causes/599255-help-stephen-kim
  • A proper defense against the U.S. government will cost over $1 million, and even after depleting his family’s life savings, Stephen still needs to raise over $500,000. To donate money to his legal defense fund, please go to: http://www.stephenkim.org/donate.html

Since the last time I posted a lot has happened! I successfully graduated and moved to Jeonju Korea where I teach at a University. Unfortunately, my Korean language skills haven't improved as much as I hoped they would, but I'm not giving up! I also experienced some new firsts since being here like, I traveled to the Philippines and had my first snorkeling adventure, I got to drink out of a coconut, back in Korea I ate my first ever snail, tried raw beef, had the fanciest meal of my life at the top of the 63 Building, and took boxing classes for a month...just to name a few. Yesterday, I even went to a Korean medicine clinic and got electric current pulsed into my back muscles. At this point I don't know how long I'll remain here in Korea but I'm definitely thankful for the people and opportunities that have come my way...  Now, I just have to see what I'll do and where I'll go next!

Béla Changsu writes:

Béla Changsu is now two and a half years old and anxiously awaiting his birthday in September. He has been practicing holding up three fingers. He would like a xylophone and a guitar.

He used to be shy, but he is rethinking that.

He and his sister 누나 Claudia practice speaking some Korean every day -- reading stories ("엄마 마중" is one of his current favorites), singing in Korean (he likes Jang Kiha and the Faces, but also sings all the kiddie standards, including 곰 세 마리 -- watch it below ), and watching Korean children's programming on TV. He is a whiz at colors, puzzles, and what letter things begin with. And he still really, REALLY likes robots.

In this photo he is enjoying a Korean meal at the University of Pennsylvania, having attended a poongmul concert there with members of Nunchi Nori (http://nunchinori.wordpress.com/), Philadelphia's Korean-adoptive and Korean-American poongmul group, founded by Béla's mom, Amber Dorko Stopper.

He plans on being the Wicked Witch of the West for Halloween 2011. "I have a green face and I be angry!"

What am I up to these days? That's a big question.

Short answer: I'm revising my novel.

Long answer:  I just moved to New York City with my husband, having taken a leave from teaching to focus on revising my novel. My writing is now an unquestionable priority—and I’m enjoying an exclusive relationship with my novel-in-progress.

TMI long answer: I’m breathing. Breathing. Inhale. Exhale. My dogs are wedged all around me, one is licking my feet, the other is licking himself. I am craving chocolate. I am trying to get used to mayonnaise being Hellman’s instead of Best Foods, and sugar being Domino’s instead of C&H.

If you’d like to know what I’m up to on a more regular basis, you can find me at my blog entitled 80,000 words (http://czilka.wordpress.com/)

Read below for details:

1 in 3 children in North Korea are malnourished.

All proceeds from Han Benefit Concert will sponsor Global Resource Services' micronutrient program for nursing mothers and infants in North Korea.

A $5 donation can sponsor a nursing mother or infant with essential nutritional support for a full year.
Your donation of $20 will sponsor four mothers and infants and a donation of $100 can change the lives of 20.

The TOP Altrock Acts from South Korea (Vidulgi OoyoO, Galaxy Express, and Idiotape) and New York (PaperDoll) are coming together to perform at Han Benefit Concert.

A once in a lifetime opportunity to rock out hard core while making a difference.

Let us, through music, treat Han (sorrow) through Han (unity).
